DISCLAIMER: The tips that I give here are meant to be just that — tips. They’re not the only way to do something. And in fact, they might not even be the best way — if you know of something better, feel free to post. But, I’ve accumulated a bit of knowledge over the years about how to run great software on the cheap — and a lot of time for free. That said, here are some tips, to which I’ll be adding along the way.
Safer, More Enjoyable Web Browsing: Mozilla Firefox

- Image via Wikipedia
Mozilla Firefox has become the most popular alternative to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, and for good reason. In the first place, it’s safer. In the second place, it’s usually faster (although the benchmark tests get complicated, and FF isn’t always faster on all of them).
In addition to being safer and faster, it’s almost infinitely customizable. You pick from a variety of themes. Personally, I’m a pretty big fan of FF 3’s default skin, but it’s nice to have the options.
But of even more valuable are Add-ons or Extensions. If you’re new to FF, you might be a bit intimidated by the number of Add-ons that are available. Some of them do very simple things, and others make very complex changes. If you have some time to spend, you’ll likely learn quite a bit by browsing on your own.
But, for those who don’t have time and would like to play with FF anyway, here is a list of my favorite Add-ons.
Also, Mozilla publishes a list of recommended add-ons on their add-ons page, which can also be useful.

Is it free?
Yep, 100% free. As I add on to this page eventually, everything I post about will be free software.
